Why a Milestone Birthday is the perfect time for family photos

Getting everyone in the same place and the same time is practically a miracle! Don't waste it on a quick group photo using your iPhone. The real treasures are the hugs, the laughter and the little connections you didn't even notice happening.
Whether it’s a 50th, 60th, 70th, 80th or even a 90th birthday, these celebrations often bring together something increasingly rare… the whole family.
Children, grandchildren, cousins, siblings and lifelong friends gather in one place, sometimes for the first time in years. It’s a moment that’s impossible to recreate, and one that’s well worth preserving.
The Turner family recently asked me to join them for an hour or so before Mary's 60th birthday bash at their farm in Milton. Three generations all together at once.. here's a selection from their gallery.
Of course, we’ll always capture the classic group photo. It’s the one everyone wants for the wall and it’s an important part of the day.
But if you ask me, the magic happens in between.
It’s the cousins running off together, laughing as if no time has passed.
It’s sisters standing arm in arm, sharing stories that no one else quite understands.
It’s brothers reminiscing over a drink.
It’s three, or even four, generations together – tiny babies nestled in the arms of parents, grandparents and great-grandparents. Those photographs often become the most treasured of all because they quietly tell the story of your family’s legacy.
As the celebration unfolds, I gently move around, documenting the moments that happen naturally. A warm hug. A burst of laughter. A proud glance across the table. Children playing while the adults chat. These are the photographs that will one day transport you back to exactly how the day felt.
Many families tell me afterwards that they hardly noticed I was there. That’s exactly how I like it. Rather than directing every moment, I let the day unfold naturally so your gallery reflects the genuine connections between the people you love most.
Years from now, these photographs won’t just remind you of whose birthday it was.
They’ll remind you of who was there.
